Competitor info

Prepare well. Compete kindly.

The best competitors are prepared, coachable, curious, and generous with the people sharing the room. Here is the operating mindset to carry into every practice and tournament.

Before the event

  • Know your event rules and time limits.
  • Bring the materials, evidence, clothing, and equipment you need.
  • Communicate early about conflicts, absences, or transportation.
  • Ask a coach what “prepared” looks like for this specific event.

In the room

  • Listen closely and respond to what is actually said.
  • Represent your research and sources accurately.
  • Treat judges, opponents, teammates, and staff with respect.
  • Use feedback as information—not as a verdict on your potential.

On the road

  • Stay with the approved team group and follow supervisor instructions.
  • Keep track of schedules, belongings, and required check-ins.
  • Use transportation and release arrangements exactly as authorized.
  • Help create a safe, calm, welcoming team environment.

After the round

  • Debrief what worked and what you would change.
  • Thank judges, opponents, hosts, and teammates.
  • Record questions or research leads while they are fresh.
  • Celebrate growth that may not show up on a ballot yet.

The full promise

Read and acknowledge the Code of Conduct.

The registration’s final step contains the team’s complete expectations around respect, integrity, preparation, safety, prohibited conduct, digital tools, and consequences.
